Royal Seal of the Fire Nation, circa Zuko Dynasty
I very recently got into Avatar: The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, and I love the shows so much! Hhahah, even my mum and dad love watching it with me.
While watching it, I felt compelled to design coat of arms (or really, they are more like seals) for each of the four nations. I started off with fire
since it's my favourite
because it was (relatively) easy to combine the ideals and imagery of the Fire nation into a coat of arms like design.
I was originally going to design a 100 year war themed CoA for fire, but I liked the idea of doing a post-war seal instead and make it less angry.
Rambling aside, it was both fun and frustrating to find a balance between the rigid forms of heraldry and the flowing circles and whorls of Chinese design. I ended up taking out the banner/motto I had and just leaving the shield and crest nice and simple, while focusing all the detail on the dual dragons.
The circle at the top represents the sun/agni and the character is for fire.
The characters between the whiskers are that for Zuko, but they could be replaced with any Fire Lords name.
In the middle, replacing a 'traditional' shield is a circle with the Fire Nation symbol in it, also referencing the pearl most chinese dragons are displayed with.
As far as the dragons go, I was hemming and hawing about giving them chained crowns (to symbolise retrained/tempered might) and instead of the traditional european crown, I drew up a chain of flame crowns, at the end of the chain is a traditional chinese tassel. The dragons also have five toes, to represent royalty.
I know chinese dragons don't have wings, but since the dragons in Avatar do, it worked out nicely.
I was hoping to work some dao swords into the design, but it was a bit crazy and busy to make them work. Speaking of crazy, those scales drove me a bit crazy.
