One in a series of commissions done for who asked for a binder cover for each of her extensive sets of Pokemon TCG that she's finished collecting.
The set this artwork covers is the amazing e-series of cards from Japan (collectorviper.com is 's website). Rather than do a cut and paste of the cards artwork, Cally asked for the repeating theme of the cards to be illustrated. In most of the trading cards from this series, the Pokemon Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno are featured, so it was simple to choose the theme.
Not so simple was the artwork. I really tried to push the boundaries of my skills in backgrounds and get a mix of saturated colours, muted tones and changing lighting. In the end, I had to dull the crazy lighting I wanted since it didn't really work out and was way too harsh on the eyes. I think there are some areas I need improving on, but otherwise, I am very happy with the result! Zapdos gave me a hard time, that yellow is not easy to shade. ;_;
I chose to do a detailed background simply because the backgrounds on the card series is so amazing I had to tribute it as well as the Pokemon it represented. The background is referenced from photos and video games and the thunderclouds were referenced from stock as well.
This is a commission, so do not re-post or edit this artwork in anyway.
