One of the 'mechanics and themes' of this particular card deck is Arceus and eclipses. I chose a lunar background as I wanted to do a circular composition (circles circles and more circles!) One thing I wanted to do is really push the boundaries of a very colourful palette. Could I do it without it being a mess? I also wanted a detailed background to compliment the first image in the series.
I also wanted to incorporate the Arceus mechanic of the different elements. Now the trading card game uses a different set of elements to the video games. In the card game there is only nine elements instead of the 17 found in the games. That's why there is only nine orbs instead of 17.
(for the record it's Colourless, Psychic, Grass, Water, Fire, Electric, Dark, Steel Fighting)
The background and mountains where heavily inspired by Boris Vallejo's crazy backgrounds while the elements were inspired in some ways by the video game Okami.
Technically this was complicated for me. One of the things i wanted to do was have all the elements of this piece on separate layers so it could be shifted and changed at a whim. I usually use one layer as I find multi-layers complicated and they don't blend as well in my eyes. There's a quite a few inaccuracies regarding lighting, but I'm striving for impact not realism in these pieces.
Re: watermark. Sorry folks, but sticky fingers taking and claiming artwork has forced my hand. I will upload a better edition once I get my redesigned logo in place.
EDIT: new watermark in place!
I also may offer a slightly edited version of this as a card game Playmat for purchase. If you are interested, please let me know!
